Listen Little Man
[5.57]
(Words and Music by David Fisher)

Listen Little Man - You’re the worm within the fruit
You’re the blight that killed the apple
You’re the drought that choked the root
Listen Little Man - You’re the wreck around the bend
Like some nemesis from Genesis
My woe-begotten thrilling secret friend

Listen Little Man to that wicked voice within
There’ll be maggots in the jam
And there’ll be tear gas on the wind
Listen Little Man - I’ll knock the wind out of your sails
Like a bad returning penny always landing losing tails
Like some pervert crucifixion you’ll be polishing the nails

But your cold world keeps turning
And we’re walking hand in hand
And your book’s not worth burning
Now I understand that ugly Little Man

Listen Little Man - You’re the ghost in the machine
You make all the puppets dance
But you can’t change the Primal Scene
Listen Little Man - It’s a fairy tale attack
When the Uroboros the dragon
Comes to suck that naughty monkey off my back

Listen Little Man - You’re the chef that cooked my goose
You were snuffing out my guiding light
As you tightened up my noose
Listen Little Man - When my cup runs out of juice
I’ll be butter side down but I’ll be glad you’re on the loose
I’ll be laughing like a clown when I can’t stand no more abuse

But your cold world keeps turning
And we’re walking hand in hand
And your book’s not worth burning
Now I understand that sneaky Little Man

Listen Little Man - I don’t pay for bad advice
I’m not that fussy who I kiss
But your lips just don’t taste nice
Listen Little Man - This enchantment’s got to end
I’ve been crawling like a serpent
Eating gravel and it drives me round the bend

Listen Little Man to the enemy within
Guilt is written on your face
Like a birthmark on your skin
Listen Little Man - You’re that evil mannequin
When that old maternal phallus comes to rape me in my sleep
If there’s a werewolf in the palace there’s no sense in counting sheep

But your cold world keeps turning
And we’re walking hand in hand
And your book’s not worth burning
Now I understand that nasty Little Man

Listen Little Man to the chaos of control
Like some crooked cure for cancer
Making cash from desperate souls
Listen Little Man - When the goodness takes it’s toll
Don’t you love thw whiff of sulphur
When your icy heart is burning likea coal

Listen Little Man - Now there’s nothing left to say
I’ve been giving you the finger
But you wouldn’t go away
Listen Little Man to the demons in your head
Have youmade a bad impression, have you failed to get ahead
While I’m enjoying this depression I won’t kick you out of bed

But your cold world keeps turning
And we’re walking hand in hand
And your book’s not worth burning
Now I understand...

Your cold world keeps turning
And we’re walking hand in hand
And your book’s not worth burning
Now I understand, now I understand...
That wretched Little Man, that funky Little Man
That fruity Little Man, that dirty Little Man
That groovy Little Man, that tasty Little Man
That lonely Little Man, that broken Little Man
That gorgeous Little Man, that gorgeous Little Man...

Notes:

The title comes from an extraordinary piece of polemic from radical psychologist Wilhelm Reich. It's about the affection we need to feel for our dark side in order to become integrated personalities or something like that. There's lots of references to Grimms fairytales in there too which i was reading around the time I wrote the song.

The great swampy riff was played by Mr Tiv.
