When the Bride Stripped Bare
[5.18]
(Words by David Fisher, Music by David Fisher and Neil McCarthy)

You called the taxi and you’re all dressed up
You’re very pretty, you could fool an expert
You hit the party and you start to flirt
You introduce yourself as “Christine”
You like the music and you start to dance
You’re moving slowly but you scuff your shoeshine
You cut an Tango and you cut a line
You got the upper hand, you use it

You didn’t want to tell him – He didn’t want to see
I must admit your story is confusing me...

When you were circling the square
Making everybody stare
It’s gonna be an interesting affair
When the bride strips bare

You know for certain that he’s not your type
He needs his momma ‘cos it’s way past midnight
He wants to hold you but it’s far too late
And could he call you in the morning?
He starts to loosen but he’s still too stiff
His hands are clumsy and he’s shaking
Too much excitement when he paws your skin
Like he was some kind of policeman
The way you move your body – You make it seem so nice
You really think you hold the key to paradise?

When you were circling the square
He was drunk and unaware
There’ll be romance in the air
When the bride strips bare

But when he kisses you he grasps the truth
He’s very angry, there’s a showdown
He might arrest you, make you face The Beak
To think he almost let the side down
Your morning stubble starts to scratch his chin
Without the wig he sees you’re balding
And he proceeded in an orderly way
To get the hell out of the building
When he denied he knew you – I know you had to laugh
You might as well confront him with that photograph...

When you were circling the square
You had to grab him by the hair
You had to pin him to your chair
When you were circling the square
You had to make him for a dare
You gotta push to get your share
When the bride strips bare, when the bride strips bare...

Notes:

I'm not terribly proud of this number - the lyrics were intended to be an "amusing" story about an off-duty policeman having a drunken assignation at a party with a transvestite - mmmmm. Still it wouldn't be out of place on a Kinks album.

The wonderful demented Dick Dale solo by Dr Peter Watts.
