What Have You Done?
[4.54]
(Words by David Fisher, Music by David Fisher and Neil McCarthy)

Tucking into that condemned man’s breakfast shows me just what you’re capable of
I see you’ve got yourself a real pearl necklace - that’s the kind you can’t wash off
Set sail with the wind in your tail, clinging to the handrail blowing up a real gale
You’re nothing and no-one...

I can’t remember all those old flames’ faces and the names of the places we crashed
How we swore we’d never go there again unless someone else picked up the cash
Nail varnish that glows in the dark, red - a real white knuckle ride, clinging to the bedstead

What have you done, What have you done?
I wanna know the details – Tell me each and every one
What have you done, What have you done?
Whispering the secrets that you couldn’t ever tell yo’ mama

Your revolutionary lives like a survivor - he’s a real dead man on leave
Making whoopee like the A-train driver when he’s waking up at break-neck speed
Catch a spy with a poisonous umbrella, then Swing him from the Weigh-Bridge - what a lucky fella
He’s nothing and no-one...

What have you done, What have you done?
There’s an angel at your table catching each and every crumb
What have you done, What have you done?
Whispering the secrets that you couldn’t ever tell yo’ mama

To all your possible futures and all your improbable pasts
In my dreams I killed a man but I didn’t make his suffering last
Those compulsive confessors – they got no place to go
‘Cos people treat you different depending on what they think they know

Round three, mother to be - you’ve got the dog and the collar
Something’s gotta give you’ll see, you can bet your bottom dollar
Black Madonna meets the Black Narcissus - it’s murder by the prayer wheel, nothing too malicious
She’s nothing and no-one...

What have you done, What have you done?
I wanna know the details – Tell me each and every one
What have you done, What have you done?
Whispering the secrets that you couldn’t ever tell yo’ mama

What have you done, What have you done?
Like an angel at your table catching every little crumb
What have you done, What have you done?
Whispering the secrets that you couldn’t ever tell yo’ mama

What have you done, What have you done?
What have you done, What have you done?
You’re nothing and no-one, nothing and no-one
Nothing and no-one...

Notes:

This started as a vague idea about how people treat each other differently depending on what they know about each other. If you find out tomorrow that your best mate had served a prison sentence for murder before you met them it would probably completely transform your relationship despite them being the same person as they were today. An important part of finding out what people are is to learn what they were before you met them. The song ended up as a stream-of-consciousness tangle of thoughts of no particular consequence.

Wonderful string arrrangements by music genius Alex Heffes played so deftly by his hand picked quartet featuring his wife Maya on violin. Incidentally Maya was one of the original "Finchley Frogettes" (child backing singers) on Paul McCartney's unfairly ridiculed song "We All Stand Together" AKA "The Frog Chorus" (It was composed for a Rupert cartoon - what did these critics think was appropriate for a child's musical - Helter Skelter?)
